Water Is Not Sound - Interactive Installation

Water has no sounds attributable to its essence: they are all induced and produced by foreign elements. The wind that breaks on the rocks, a single drop that reverberates in a cave, a sink that loses breaking the silence of the night. The water doesn’t produce sound, but it is produced by context in which it lives, the environment that is invaded and modulated by it.
Water is not Sound is a multimodal sound installation composed of “Bacino Idrosensitivo” and “Architettura a gravità di Gocce”, with which the user investigates some ways to use one of the elements from which life is born, giving life to sounds using water as a means of actuation and sound generation. A tank full of water and the force of gravity are what the users of the work will have available to be seduced and interact with the water in the way they are used to doing it every day. The sound results will be an extraordinary experience: the unveiling of the enchantment that is hidden in the most common phenomena.
The sound installation consists of a quadraphonic diffusion system for the Bacino Idrosensitivo and a stereo front for the Architettura a gravità di Gocce. Like a moving fluid, these devices weave a sound environment created to enhance the liquid quality of the water.
The user experiences the typical non-periodicity of any aquatic environment; a flowing river, the waves of the sea, are just some of the sound archetypes to which the installation refers to trace this sound uncertainty.

A transparent tank can capture the movements of the user who explores the volume of water with his hand, creating a sound generation consistent with the gesture just performed.
The volume of the tub is mapped thanks to a pattern of sensors that allow the computer to approximate the position and movement of the user's hands, taking advantage of the digitized data for the generation and modification of the sound material.

A system allows four nozzles to drop drops of water on as many surfaces. The user can decide how often and on what surface he will impact a small amount of water; since each drop falls on a different material, it is possible to obtain a certain variety of timbres and rhythms.
The device is composed of an electromechanical system consisting of four actuators, with which it is possible to interact through a practical and intuitive interface.
A simple and instinctive action, able to make you think about the infinite sonic possibilities of water
