Despite all the stringent laws and guidelines in food safety, there are still food manufacturers who produce products with additives and unknown ingredients that breached the food safety standards just to source for cheaper alternatives and earn greater profit. This is a serious issue to look into as their action intentionally deceived the consumers and more importantly causing a potential heath risk and even death. Examples of such cases are the recent horsemeat scandal in Europe and the 2008 Chinese milk melamine scandal.
The goal of my project is to raise awareness and bring such unethical practice to people’s attention and in turn intensify public pressure on the food manufacturers to act ethically. The public will demand for greater transparency and hopefully the government will intervene.
The concept of my project is to set up a made up company called the “HOAX Food Inc.” that produces a series of counterfeit food products containing harmful additives and unknown ingredients. The company is not concern about profit making but rather provoking the consumers to think about food safety standards and issue. This will create a shock factor and a pun to the unethical controversial issue which will cause a greater impact.
