Frankenstein | Book Design

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is about the importance of evaluating your actions before  you are confronted with unpleasant, or in this case tragic, consequences. Like Lydia M. Child states, “men never violate the laws of God without suffering the consequences sooner or later”. The misfortunes Frankenstein faces are a result of his ambitions and his lack of assessment of the consequences that could occur due to his actions (or lack thereof).

The goal of this project was to redesign Frankenstein as a modern adaption. Circles are the main symbols used throughout the book to represent some of the themes presented in the novel. First, circles symbolize eternity as they have no beginning or end. This is related to God's act of creation, which ties to Frankenstein breaking the laws of nature and creating life himself. Circles also represent wholeness, and the interruption in the circles represent the desperation of not feeling whole and rather empty. The Celtics also think of circles as protective emblems that cannot be crossed or broken by evil forces. However, the circles in this book are never perfect, representing the evil that breaks through and ends up causing death and despair.
