"How Could This Be Wrong"

Content: Infographic
This is a visual representation of the song "How Could This Be Wrong" from The Glitch Mob. Created completely in Adobe Illustrator. It took time to go through all the instruments, the timing and the correct placement circles I must admit, but it was worth it. It is one of my favourite pieces.

Description

Music is for me very important and there is never a moment where I’m not either listening to music or making music in my head. I wanted to make something different for the visualisation and came across some visualisations of sound, that were very aesthetic even though it was only data from scientific software. And I got the idea to encode a song on paper in that way, so that it would be in theory possible to recognize it just by looking on the illustration. This turned out to be very hard, as paper is not screen and thus one is very limited with the tools and possibilities available. I thought about ways to represent music in a unique way and came up with the idea to use the stems and tracks of each individual element/instrument that was used/played to create the song. To make it more appealing for the eye and create a feeling of the song as a single product (also making a reference to vinyl and CDs) I decided to use circular shapes, with lines representing the different tracks and when they are active/played. I also included some symbols and names of the elements/instruments to help viewers understand the infographic and make it easier for them to get how to read it properly. I also included the name of the band and the song and a very short description to make it even easier. I tried to keep it as simple as possible and didn’t use many colours as the infographic is already quite difficult to understand as it represents rather abstract data.
