IRIS project costume design

My first experience as a costume designer  for the work of a choreographer Anna Barkalova, Vaganova Ballet Academy graduate. The performance is an expressive reflectionon on the story "Iris" by Herman Hesse.

I was to produce 5 dance costumes and a dress for the singer in 3 weeks.

Hand painted white watercolour paper was used for the dress of a singer
As a reference I was given a Van Gogh's painting, which inspired me with it's colors. The concept was to create something remiscent o childhood, something playful.

Some pieces were sewn, and some were collected from thrift shops. The availability of fabrics and garments affected the intial sketches.

For the fittings I had to come to rehearsals, to the dancers' homes several times, which was complicated but fun. The whole lineup of the cosumes was created digitally.
The upper dress of the singer is made out of hand painted paper. The construction was inspired by the petals if an iris flower. A zipper was inserted on the back.
As a unifying touch we added colored leggings and socks to the outfits.
Sheen fabrics turned out to work great with the light on stage.
Here's the recording of the performance. I was so pleased to see that my work was integrated into the whole image of the performance.
