vild-çild

A project aimed at exploring and understanding the processes involved in wood bending.
A stool meant for children to play with, the name was arrived at by blending together the child, the animal and a playful look at words.

ideation render

vild-çild was inspired by the age old rapport shared by a child with animals. The form is simple and uncluttered, evoking an innocence and easiness. The colors can be varied according to the animal imagined.
It consists of a body made with white ash wood and hand and leg rests covered on by hard foam. An upholstered seat was added in for extra comfort.

The wood to be used for the stool was first soaked in water for 2-3 nights to increase the moisture content in it. It was then heated inside a steam box and as a result the wood fibers softened and allowed its bending.

A mould was made with the radii that was to be obtained in the final pieces.
The processed wood was then wrapped around a mould fixed onto a table, clamped on and left out to dry.

The bent pieces were then attached together using dowels and araldite to get the basic final form.

It was then chamfered and sanded to get the smooth finish required to ensure the child's comfort and safety.

collection render

vild-çild is envisaged to be part of a furniture collection ranging through seating for kids and adults and display units. All units in the above collection will be made using the same mould and therefore will have the same radii.

Thank you.
