天圓地方 Round Sky Square Earth

“天圓地方” is an experimental video and sound installation done for Fugitive Voices Autumn Term 2019, Royal College of Art.
Sound by Toby Chengwei Mao and Visual graphics by Can Yang.
Based on my previous editorial project M-A-T-C-H (2018), we experiment with visual metaphor that translate the symbolical concept of the physical forms from the old project—a circle and a square into a new open-end narrative.
M-A-T-C-H was inspired by one scene from Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey: an ape discovers the use of bones as both a tool and a weapon. He throws a bone into the air and as the bone spins the form dissolves into an orbiting weaponized satellite. The “match cut” draws a visual and conceptual connection between the two objects as examples of primitive and advanced tools.

Our metaphor comes with both the symbolical quality of the physical objects and from the sequential transition from one object to another. All visual content could be transformed from one to another through different implementations such as semantic image transfer and latent spaces exploration.
