David Mark Fowler's profile

Living in Yesterday (Salem, Massachusetts)

cluster of tombstones
in late afternoon sun
murky shadows emanate
across the cemetery lawn

gateway from yesterday
lies open in perpetuity
as light from the past
spills into the present
aged wood exposed to
harsh maritime elements
painted surface mellows
fades into duller hues

vintage ship without sails
former piece de resistance
now marveled for novelty's sake
no longer tests deep waters

a well-lived life just
a footnote in history
awaiting rediscovery
among the stacks
customs abandoned
exchanged for progress
chanteys of another age
echo far in the distance
exotic goods prized
in yesteryear
lose appeal
in the modern marketplace
newer baubles
catch the eye
glass-thin trinkets
beckon passersby
bygone triumphs
become curios
and curiosities
in an old fashioned window

haunted by fables the
witch hunt pursues
ambition disappears
withdraws like a recluse
living in yesterday
like a museum house
winsome on the outside
empty within
gardens well-tended
exterior brightens
but nothing inside
ever changes again
