At Teefactory we were faced with a challenge: capture textile printing processes such as screen printing, digital printing or vinyl in a unique and static illustration.

On the other hand we wanted it to be a simple and funny illustration.  We prefer to dispense some details rather than confuse the customer too much.  We didn’t want it to be too technical. Just enough for a person to see the image and get an idea “what the technique is all about”, and most of all to make clear that the printing process is not a simple push of a button.  We wish! xD

The characters created by Haring with its characteristic state in motion seemed a perfect starting point to bring our processes to life.  They help convey that printing is a living process which requires teamwork.

Let's ask a few questions to Mekaeli, our designer:

What has been the most  complicated part of creating the illustrations?
Getting close to Haring’s way of drawing.  It has nothing to do with what I do in general and it forced me to be more synthetic when it comes to drawing.
The fact that we’re talking about something very specific such as textile printing, trying to explain all steps within the printing process for everyone to understand wasn’t easy.  It was important to explain that we don’t simply press a button “make shirt”, but at the same time it couldn’t be too technical. I had to simplify a lot of machinery, being careful to not turn them into abstract objects.

What has been the most fun part of creating the illustrations?
The moment of the definition of the illustration.  In fact, these are more than just illustrations, it’s a mini comic and the narrative aspect needs to be taken into account.  I had the best time with the vinyl one, which is very synthetic, but at the same time very dynamic, describing the “circuit” for printing, the cutting and the transfer of the vinyl.

What process have you used?
First I drew everything in my normal style.  This way I control better what I want to tell, as well as the anatomy of the characters.
Following I drew everything again but this time in the Haring style.
And finally I’ve passed everything to vectors: the Haring style lends itself very well to this technique and makes it easier to reproduce on vinyl.
