Jordan Kay's profile

Starbucks Sumatra Coffee Packaging

This single-origin coffee traditionally features the a rendering of the revered Sumatran tiger. And since this piece is typically a stand-alone limited-time offering, I had complete freedom to create the piece in any way my wanted.
I love the look of Risograph prints, as well as silkscreening, so I decided to experiment and take that approach. Therefore, I used lithography by way of loose overlapping colors, to provide depth and emotion to the commercial product, thinking of it more as a band poster or Riso art print.
The company had never printed packaging this way before, and they were excited to see the "magic third colors" that came forward with the overlaps. It was a major production risk, but because of the bravery and skill of the print masters involved, it came out beautifully.

This design won a Gold Medal in the surface design category for Society of Illustrators 62, in 2020.
Packaging design for Starbucks Sumatra (limited time offering.) Launched in Asia markets only in the fall of 2019. Printed in five spot colors, some areas with opaque white ink, and some colors printed straight onto foil, along with select matte coated areas.

 One of my favorite projects.
I worked with a stellar team of print experts and friends as well to help make this piece truly shine!
