Crafted Landscapes

The Concept

Crafted Landscapes is a project developed for the group exhibition STARDUST | Fotografia e mitologia western. The exhibition, curated by Francesco Zanot and Luca Andreoni features work by the 2018-2019 students of the Master in Photography and Visual Design (NABA Milano). It runs from the 28th September until the 30th October 2019 at MUFOCO, via Frova 10, Cinisello Balsamo - MI.

As students, we were tasked to interpret the 'Western Movie' theme and create an artist book. Being a designer by profession, I decided to merge the world of graphic design with photography and analyse themes commonly found in western movies using shapes that form the bedrock of any design.

By adopting this deconstructivist approach, I could take an abstract and analytical approach, This allowed me to distinguish my work and also understand better the syntagmatic and paradigmatic elements that form the basis of the Western Movie. The work, presented as a puzzle, leaves it up to the readers to conduct their own constitutive analysis. More than providing a definitive answer, Crafted Landscapes aims to be a starting point for further visual inquiries into the Western movie genre.

Book Production

The inside pages were digitally printed on fine art paper at Studio GM. Once the inside pages were printed, I turned to Daniela Lorenzi of A14 - Stampa Originale d' Arte to help me with the book's cover and binding. Her experience with artists proved invaluable in helping me identify which cover and bookbinding techniques worked best to communicate what Crafted Landscapes is about.
