Gotham Typeface Study

This was a large study of the typface ‘Gotham’ by Hoefler & Co. First I studied the typeface in not only its design, but it’s history as well. Then I used distinctive characteristics and traits of the typeface to make a word bank of things that define Gotham. Using this word bank, I created a 9-tile modular showcase of the typeface. Each tile is 13″x13″ and has been designed so that panels can be rotated or displaced to create a number of different compositions using icons I designed that “interlock” and match when tiles get switched around and rotated. The showcase mainly reflects the bold, working-class, American feel of the Gotham typeface, as well as the history of its presence in New York City.
