Renaissance Theatre in Abstract Form

ADESPRN
LINE, TRIANGLE, AND CIRCLE
Through this activity, we were tasked to represent the topic given to us and translate these ideas we've researched about into the basic elements and shapes in art, namely: lines, triangles, and circles. In my case, I was given the topic of theatre and chose to focus on the History of Theatre in Middle Ages to Renaissance Period for Europe and Japan. Each sculpture having a focus or theme about a certain figure or form being talked about.

1. LINES
Concept
Mainly supposed to represent Kabuki Theatre from Japan, the sculpture tries to visualise the sound people hear during plays. This tries to captures the rhythm of going up and down because people on stage have to know how to project their voices in order to be heard, smaller waves representing soft projection and vice versa. Observing Kabuki plays, their action needed to be loud and dynamic to catch the audiences attention and interest. The gap in between the "waves" represents the parts of a play where there are pauses to add a dramatic effect to a scene they’d like to intensify. As a side note, the sculpture looks like a path because it, in a way, represents the plot of a story too.
2. TRIANGLES
Concept:
Mimicking performers on a stage, the shapes of the triangles aren’t straight or stiff because performers have to be expressive through the movements they do. I used this in the form of triangles instead of the circles because even though performers have to be fluid in movement, on stage they need to be sharp and emphasise the movements they do for the audience to see and understand what they’re doing. Also, if you look at it from another angle, it looks whimsical and this could reflect the commedia dell’arte.
3. Circle
Concept
Relating to the works of Shakespeare, the spirals supposedly represent emotions emerging or going up. These moods could be seen as anger or passion such as in Shakespeare's works having intense emotion and dramatisation to his plots and characters. Like the spiral, these emotions can be something people are tangled and caught within. Being exposed to these emotions can also cause people to start acting brashly which leads to destruction, which is why these spirals altogether form into the shape of a fire. This fire can mean various things such as intense passionate love, or a destructive force could burn whatever it touches, adding to the angsty theme that we see Shakespeare have in some of his plays.
