The New York Women's Surf Film Festival, a project of Lava Girl Surf, celebrates the filmmakers and female wave riders who live to surf, highlighting their sense of adventure, connection to the ocean and love for their own communities and those they discover. The festival is held over 8 days in two cities and includes beach clean ups, yoga sessions, art shows, markets, surfing and film screenings.
This years New York Women’s Surf Film Festival centered around women’s empowerment. Women are trail blazing new paths in surfing and striving to close the gap, in the form of prize money and recognition, between themselves and their make counterparts. To bring visual form to this years theme – graphic elements were created using spray paint. The expressiveness of the spray paint reflects the movement, energy and power of female surfers. These organic sprays were integrated with photography to reflect the idea of trail blazing and taking/making your own path.
