This series of drawings was informed by my interest in textured surfaces in the environment around us and how commonplace things can sometimes be considered as pieces of art. Initially conceived as a series of photos, the common factor being they were all doors found in Midtown Detroit. After finding and photographing 80 doors, I decided to do a series of tracings of these photos instead. This removed the environment/background from the image and allowed the unique aspects of the door itself to be highlighted. Additionally, it flattened all the doors onto a 2-D plane, which yielded interesting results, especially with graffiti.
In addition to documenting and organizing the tracings, I created a poster for a fictional gallery that would be displaying the work. First, I created a type lockup that reinforced the idea of a door by utilizing a bold, right angled stroke and stacked text. Next, I printed the lockup, traced and filled it in, then scanned it and created a digital layout for the poster.
