Barbershop Harmony Poster: New Horizon's Chorus Spring Concert

Summary:
The Senecaland District of the Barbershop Harmony Society is home to a variety of quartets and choruses. Within my community, there was the New Horizons Chorus and their smaller branch, the Upstate Harmonizers. Through a mutual connection, the New Horizons Chorus asked me to design them a poster to advertise for their spring show for three years. Because I was a less experienced designer when I initially started in college, the first two aren’t up to par with my current skills, but the third one improved upon what I learned from the other two, which I’m pleased to share with you today.
Goals and Constraints:
Like any project, there were design constraints. For one, the poster had to have a plain white background so that it could be reproduced easily on someone’s home printer. It needed to be minimal while also informing people of when the concert took place, where it took place, and how to obtain tickets. Equally importantly, it had to be readable for a senior audience, meaning the text couldn’t be too small.
Color and Hierarchy:
To accomplish this, I decided to use the classic colors of a barbershop pole, red and blue, as well as a bold, serif typeface to make it readable and eye-catching. There was a lot of back and forth on the typeface, but that was the common denominator with all the choices I presented to the chorus. The color difference was helpful in denoting where to get tickets and how much they cost too. The bulk of the space was filled with images, namely their guest quartet, Category Four, and the chorus, as well as their logo. Fitting everything in an organized manner was a fun challenge.
Conclusion:
It was a quick project, but a fulfilling one. With my effective design, the information about the show was clearly presented for anyone who wished to attend. Best of all, it felt like a Barbershop Harmony poster without needing to be too cheesy.
