Summary

An updated corporate website needed to be designed based on a newly implemented mobile-ready web CMS platform. The design was iterated on through wireframes and mockups with the help of software tools like Balsamiq Mockups and Adobe Photoshop, respectively. Vector illustrations were created separately in Adobe Illustrator. The resulting mobile-friendly website presented a more professional and modern company image while catering both to technically-minded and business-minded site visitors.

Background

The need to redesign their corporate website came about as a result of new product releases, new marketing direction and growth within the company. The old site had good content and clear navigation but wasn’t mobile friendly and generally needed to expand beyond the original target audience to reflect the multi-faceted need of modern electronic records management.

My Role

I was responsible for the visual design of multiple site templates and user experience of the site as a whole. The site required a lot of custom graphic assets to support the textual content, which were designed along with the responsive layouts. As a preliminary step, in order to migrate existing blog content, a web CMS was selected with suitable templating and dynamic content capabilities.
Details

Business analysts and information workers familiar with records management challenges at an enterprise or government level comprised the site’s target audience. I interviewed a subject matter expert on the team to compile an overview of target audience motivators and deciding factors. Throughout the home page users were invited to recognize a specific ECM or records management challenge and click through to explore the dedicated solutions pages.

One of the main requirements was to design a responsive site, in order to improve usability and reach a wider target audience. User stories developed through research  and iterative wireframing were turned into mobile and desktop designs for all page types. This covered relevant site visitor needs like viewing a product demo or finding information on ways to improve information compliance. To present the software products as working in tandem, the navigation incorporated separate pages for enterprise ECM and records management problem areas, instead of dedicated product pages. An audit of existing site content, which happened in collaboration the marketing and sales teams, drove the approach for positioning the products in combination to address customer needs.

The new design was bolder in its use of brand colors and employed simple and illustrative graphic language. The fonts used prioritized readability and multi-screen versatility, but at the same time reflected existing marketing materials.
