VARIABLE - Experimental Variable Font

Context & Concept

VARIABLE is a bachelor degree project about the experimental development of a variable font. The project is supposed to showcase the extensive potential of variable fonts as creative tools. The concept behind the typeface and its overall appearance is based on the interaction between human and artificial intelligence.
It includes eight font styles with seven variable design axes ranging from sans, serif, mono and an abstract pattern font to weight, width, contrast and slant.

Additional I designed an interactive website to illustrate and actually use the scope of the variable font. With the mouse movement the variable font can be manipulated.

Although variable fonts can be very useful as creative tool, the positive aspects also have some downsides. Multiple font styles can be stored inside one single file. With that though the design process is chained with some major problems. It is more difficult to coordinate the fonts with each other and the combination of different styles within the variable font creates some surprisingly unrecognizable letterforms. Otherwise, these letterforms were some of the most interesting aspect of the project, so I decided to include them into the final workup. It became a project that celebrates coincidences and errors that occurred within the variable font.
