PATINA - A STANDING LAMP INSPIRED BY NATURE RECLAIMING DERELICT BUILDINGS
Patina was designed in response to a lighting brief tasking designers to create a lamp from their surroundings. Originally from Glasgow I have always lived within a city centre and one thing consistent with all industrial cities is derelict buildings acting as visual reminds of constant progress and past expansion.

I focused heavily on the various manufacturing and finishing processes required to create the finish and aesthetic of natures constant battle with manmade structures. Copper pipe, brass and concrete were used as core materials due to their heavy use in commercial buildings and homes. The copper pipe underwent several intensive finishing processes to achieve the corroded blue patina I achieved. Firstly, the copper was washed and sanded to remove oils and create a rough surface to work on and develop, the copper was then placed in a vapour acid bath with salt to speed up corrosion that a pipe would experience over several years in contact with the elements, the pipes were then sealed to preserve the blue hue. The bowl housing the plants was spun from a sheet of copper and underwent the same patina process, this process on the bottle will continue as the plants are watered over time acting as a living piece of sculpture.

3d Modelling and 3d printing was used in the creation of a bespoke dimmer switch
up-cycled from a brass water valve. An internal collar was designed and manufactured alongside a dissembled rotary switch to create a functional dimmable switch using the original water valve handle.
