THE SIKH TURBAN
Photographed and Conceptualized by @houseofsingh and @shekharmann_photo, ‘The Sikh Turban’ is a photo series aimed at spreading awareness about different styles of turbans. The project also aims to eradicate several misconceptions which exist globally regarding the turban. In this project, the artists have tried to cover 8 different styles of The Sikh Turban

Turban (Dastaar) is one of the most powerful symbols of the Sikh community.
In ancient times, the turban was only worn by the elites of the society. The Sikh gurus rebelled against this system, teaching instead that all people are equal irrespective of their origin - there are no high or low amongst us.

The Sikh turban represents the embodiment of Sikh teachings, the love of the Guru and the sigma to do good deeds. The turban also protects a Sikh's long unshorn hair and keeps the hair clean. The turban is a gift given to the Sikhs on Vaisakhi Day of 1699 by the Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh.
International Turban Day is celebrated on April 13th every year. This event started in 2004 to bring awareness about the strict requirement on Sikhs to don the turban as a mandatory part of their religion.
To celebrate this International Turban Day, two artists from New Delhi came together with a project; “The Sikh Turban”.
