HOUSING PROJECT - 6TH SEMESTER - GUC

The project's main purpose was studying the sustainability aspects that can shape a better life for the inhabitants of housing units.

All students had to analyze buildings from all around the world, the same buildings were changed to adapt with the atmosphere of Luxor, Egypt. The internal spaces and its functions were changed according to the new embedded culture and also due to the change in the function of the building.

The building that was used in the study was the UCLA Students Housing Complex and Dormitory in Los Angeles, USA by LOHA. The functions of the building were university students based. For example, the 3 main functions were: shared students apartments, open gathering spaces and retail shops at the ground floor.

In the adaptation of the building in Luxor, the areas of the apartments were kept almost the same. However, changes in the internal divisions and spaces occurred to fit in the new context.

ADAPTATION: ELEVATION
ADAPTATION: SECTION
The new adapted site was large enough to add more green areas and seating areas.
The ground floor contained only public activities and functions such as; a market, a bakery, a grocery shop and 2 restaurants. The two restaurants have outside seating areas that overlook the center of the public green area
ADAPTATION: SITE PLAN
The arrangement of functions is organized according to the acoustic comfort of the inhabitants. Bedrooms are placed back-to-back to reduce the noise caused by living rooms users, and bedrooms are often facing the exterior walls of the building so it is as far as possible from the corridor and it noise.

The ground floor contains only public activities and functions such as; a market, a bakery, a grocery shop and 2 restaurants as they serve and make products that are mainly bought by the building’s users.

The building occupies only a small part of the plot and the rest is left for the landscape.
Almost all of the social areas in the site are public except the roof decks. Only pedestrians are found on the site in order to prevent pollution.
