Palm Springs, mid 1950’s - Pat ‘The Bird’ Florence is having the time of his life. His true joy is his bar, The Paradiso Palms. Mobsters,  moguls and celebrities fill the seats, swapping stories about crime, business, and style over tables of fine food and outrageous Pina Coladas. 

It’s the place people come to play, and although violent business is checked at the door, the stories flow as freely as wine. Pat’s the centre of the party scene. The ladies love him, the men want to be him, and everyone wants a 1950s selfie equivalent with him. He rubs shoulders with mobsters, moguls and celebrities - he knows all their secrets, and has a secret book recording all the scandalous details.

But the book poses a problem for Pat. The mob discover its existence, and in an effort to silence ‘The Bird’, a hit is ordered. To save his own neck, Pat turns to the FBI. In exchange for dealing the dirt of his many mobster guests, Pat enters the witness protection programme, forced to change his name, and is quickly shipped off to a place very dissimilar to Palm Springs - Wellington, NZ.

Old habits die hard though. Through his irrepressible charm, cockiness (and some would say, downright stupidity), Pat (now Joe Flamingo) is drawn back to the hospitality game, and more specifically to the bustling waterfront of the coolest little capital.

And so the story begins…..
