I N T E R N A L S M A L L W O R K S
Free experimentation with watercolor leads to unplanned surface effects and surprising color palettes. These initial quick paintings create atmospheres and structures that can suggest unplanned imagery. They guide me to find subject matter as I become immersed over long periods of time, or when returning again to discover more.
Watching the content emerge keeps my focus on the compositional and figurative relationships. I sketch lightly in pencil over the watercolor surface to define the edges and bulk of what I'm finding and add pastel to strengthen the effects. The graphite and color can be erased and adjusted without disturbing the dry watercolor as I pay close attention to what the image wants to become.
