October 12, 2019 - It is with great pleasure that I present For the Love of Truth, my first solo art show. These pieces were created over the span of a year and a half, and represent personal cycles, joys and responsibilities of parenthood, and choices that we can make against the backdrop of the unpredictable world in which we live. My hope is that these themes will inspire, move and resonate with you. Please enjoy!

There are times when despair pulls you down. The raven began appearing with this piece. It can symbolize life magic, mystery of creation, personal transformation, fearlessness, and adaptability. The extreme crowding here creates claustrophobic tension and a longing for release.

Determination is on the other side of despair. A change in perspective can reframe the mind, taking the same elements of sad desperation, transforming them into hope. The confined space in this piece serves as the launching place to triumph.

Measuring a summer’s day / Only find it slips away ... Tangerine, tangerine, living reflections of a dream... Robert Plant would sometimes introduce this at concerts by saying: “This song is for our families and friends and people we’ve been close to. It’s a song of love at its most innocent stages.”

My late father’s favorite flower, the peony is considered a potent symbol of beauty, fragility and the fleeting nature of existence. Inspired by renaissance chiaroscuro - the effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on an object.

11 Shiva's Storm

Newspaper collage, acrylic on cardboard box with custom internal wood frame
You can acknowledge what is around you and still create something beautiful and divine. The Shiva lingam is a short cylindrical pillar-like symbol made of stone, here adorned with three sacred ash stripes and red turmeric called kumkum. Shiva’s role is to destroy the universe in order to re-create it. He embodies the extreme opposites of destruction and calm.

You can still create something beautiful from, because of and despite of what is around you. Created on a recycled cardboard box covered in newspaper stories of the world. However much I try to avoid the news, it is because of it that this piece was born.

Mixed media sculpture with vintage 1949 calculus book, silver leaf, shells, dried leaves, beads and semiprecious stone
From the enormous planets and stars to the smallest particles and cells, almost all things are constantly in motion. Calculus describes change across time and space and here serves as the anchor around which precious matter transforms from one state to another. The dragonfly symbolizes change, transformation, adaptability, and self-realization. Also, the song.

Perspective study of time and space. There is a comfort, quiet and stillness of the past that grounds me, but the unpredictable future ebbs and flows into the present. The broom shrub on the landing is for my sister, Leela.

In my garden, there’s a bougainvilla that a dear friend gave me. Over the years it has grown and become stronger. When I see it, I think of those who lift me up and make life gorgeous. The title is borrowed from one of husband’s instrumental compositions.

Laasya is the graceful, female devotional dance of Goddess Parvati in response to Lord Shiva’s male cosmic dance. It is said that their love dance created the world. My graphics company Laasya Design, was created as my devotion to the universe. This piece came in a meditation.

Marigolds remind me of India and represent the sun, passion and creativity. They are often associated with weddings depicting beauty and can be thought of as symbols of a new beginning for the married couple.

A nostalgic tribute. Inspired by my favorite book My Family and Other Animals, where a mother attempted to create an idyllic childhood in Corfu for her children. Achilles was a happy, young tortoise, used in this piece to slow down time.

27 Daffodil Yellow Villa | Ulysses Over The Ionian Sea

Inspired by My Family and Other Animals, a story set on the enchanted Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s, where an English family lived an eccentric and free life for a few years. Ulysses, a soft-winged owl floats like “grey ash” over the Ionian Sea, here representing the ephemeral nature of life. Lemons are my children’s favorite.
