Karla Design Fiber Mosaics

Over the last 20 years I have focused on creating fiber mosaics, using fiber (deconstructed fabrics, specialty yarns, iridescent threads, metallic ribbons and raw fibers) to create artwork. These pieces are created in a multi-layer fashion, then stitched together in a free-motion fashion. When the fabrics and threads are cut and assembled, their individual characteristics almost disappear, and what's left is a play of color and texture. They are either stretched on wood frames with gallery edges, or are set into a frame. The size of these fiber mosaics range from 6" x 6" to 42" x 42".

The piece entitled "Breathe" is a bit different. This collage was created on cotton duck. The black outlines and lettering were stitched by machine using a free-motion foot. Then color was added using using dissolvable paint markers and color sticks with water, along with papers and transfers.

This fiber art has been shown and sold at art shows throughout the Midwest, and at a contemporary art gallery downtown Cincinnati. They have won multiple awards, Best of Category, Best New Artist, Purchase Award, and many honorable mentions.
