PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun gatherings where creative people get together and share their ideas, works or thoughts, in the PechaKucha 20x20 format. Every PechaKucha Night city is hosted by a local organiser, who has an annual Handshake Agreement with PechaKucha HQ to run their event series. This time the event was hosted at Lokal Bar in Trondheim and I was asked to create the material promoting the event.

As the brief was very open I got to be experimental with the design. I choose to focus on my interest in abstract expressionism and tried to find a way to incorporate that into my design.

My process was more or less like this. After researching the event and the client, I made several paintings. Then I photographed them, obscuring the paintings with different materials. The next step was to chop them up digitally, playing with different compositions, collages. In the end, I chose to go for a black and white treatment of the paintings to preserve a focus on the most important information in the poster. Of the several different sketches, I finally went with the one with newspaper sheets stuck to the canvas. I really liked the way the text lost its contextual meaning and became an expressive graphical element.
