IwamotoScott was invited through a competitive call to architects and designers to participate in the traveling group exhibition, Open House: Architecture and Technology for Intelligent Living, organized by the Vitra Design Museum and Art Center College of Design. Initial design concepts explore architectural translations of 'calm' or 'ambient technology'. These become vehicles to engage the exhibition brief calling for looking 25 to 50 years toward the future to rethink notions of the 'smart house'. Jellyfish House proposes a new architecture that can integrally harvest rainwater, filter its own gray water, aid in wetlands restoration and cleanup of toxic soils, while deploying an environmentally-adaptive, multilayered, arterial structural skin that fluctuates between opaque and translucent states. Jellyfish House reimagines the smart house via the dynamic nature of its transmutable architecture. The project proposes a new spatial/environmental synthesis that combines realtime reactive adaptation to environmental conditions, infrastructural performance made visible, and active user input-based transformation of the building envelope.
