an organized mess

sp19. a collection inspired by grocery stores and crowded markets and the frenzy of activity within them.
the initial concept was a daily routine, in which I reflected on my recurring activities throughout the week. one of these tasks was always going to the markets with my grandmother when I was younger.
people shuffling through, haggling on prices, picking the freshest produce, advertising the latest sales. crisp cucumbers, rotting apples, dried sausages. these are the pungent smells and clamorous sounds that come rushing back.
the pristine and always-filled shelves of American supermarkets have a dystopian feeling about them. they're stationary as opposed to the shoppers moving through the aisles.
final outfit: cape and jeans
some pages from my sketchbook
I used long exposure to capture the seams and details of garments in movement.
jeans in the shape of tobi trousers pieced together with three pairs of men's jeans found at Savers. all buttons and flys were closed to make a fabric out of the jeans first. patterns were drawn according to the drape.
fabric recycled from FABSCRAP.
cape is two semicircles clasped together. it can be completely opened all the way around. bottom hem closed by snaps.
