Zoetrope was an experiment in ambiguity and recognition. I wanted to observe in real time how we evaluate some shapes as being valid letterforms with meaning, and discard others as “empty” abstract marks. I drew a set of letters and swapped their left and right sides. These pieces connect to make new shapes that may be meaningless or familiar, but are most often ambiguous, clouding any recognition with doubt. It has the ironic result of being easier to read in cursory glances than close letter-by-letter reading.    Designed 1992
