SPACE ODYSSEY

One of the greatest accomplishments of humankind is the invention of machines that allow us to fly and explore our world and the universe, thus, for this project, I wanted to illustrate this feat through typography.

I took inspiration from vintage sci-fi posters and airline posters from the 1960s and 1970s when air travel started to take off and there was a big obsession with space exploration after Apollo 11 was launched. During this time, futuristic aesthetics were very popular in design, thus for my poster, I want to implement the minimalistic, geometrical and mechanical aesthetic that was popular during that time. This also reflected the ethos of society during a time when the feat of flight and space exploration was achieved.

To achieve this aesthetic, I designed my own geometrical and mechanical letters by only using rectangular blocks to create the words “Space Odyssey,” which references space exploration films from the 60s. These words and letters are used to create an image of a rocket ship (made entirely of words and letters) that is launching into the sky, signifying the act of flying and space exploration.
