Welcome to a brief cut of my university design portfolio!
Starting off with Illustrations- A Conceptual Self Portrait. The Marigold of Ice and Fire
We had to create a self-portrait that wasn't allowed to contain us in it, so we had to take the approach of using symbolism and design elements to represent ourselves.
This was a commission I had early in my college career. A Mr. Cool (I swear that's actually his real last name) wanted a banner to use for online streaming of the game Destiny. He provided me with specifics such as his in game tag, the class he used and its abilities, and I ran with it from there.
This is a side series I've been doing on the side as an exploration of Tribal style designs. I decided to base them on myself and my friends favorite animals to start, and then branch out from that point. From the top down there is the Wolf, Fox, Fish, and Monkey.
This was the result of a photorealism project wherein we needed to create a hyper-realism replica of a metal tin and its contents. We had to create this replica using nothing but a photograph the of the object, and Adobe Illustrator. Upon the class critique, my only criticism was the shadows along the bottom of the case being too prominent. I had to contain my laughter, because I never even designed the shadows- my professor did. She insisted I have shadows despite them being absent from the photograph.
Onward to some photoshop content, this was my first foray into photoshop painting; or digital painting at all for that matter. For this assignment we had to take a photograph that capture some kind of feeling or emotion, and then digitally paint that image in photoshop using particular tools and techniques within photoshop. The result was this- Somberboarding.
This was a movie poster for a fictitious film. We were told the film was meant to be sci-fi, but ultimately we could do whatever we wanted as long as it was approved. What came of this was An Angel's Fletcher, a supernatural thriller based inspired by urban, western, and Asian folklore and mythology. In this I had to photoshop both of the cover characters, such as altering skin, hair, and eye color, shading, blemishes, resolution issues, and of course basic cropping. The bow was created using similar painting methods to the Somberboarding poster. The hands and typography were mostly created as vector graphics in illiustrator, but were then ported into Photoshop for final polishes and effects.
One of my new favorite mediums is 3D modelling. This was a model of a Pirate Journal which was modelled, painted, and pre-rendered in ZBrush. The details and exact are all my own ideation, but the general concept, such as object placement, and the elements like using a skull and crossbones, octopus, metal compass etc were all instructed by a Lynda.com tutorial for ZBrush. The next images will show the other angles of the book, including the back, and a presentation angle.
Last in this look at my university design portfolio is my most recent completed 3D project. For this project we had to create a photorealistic boxcutter knife. This was also instructed via Lynda.com, but we were encouraged to take our own directions with this. As a result, my knife is entirely my own design. The knife is composed of a small number of separate pieces, such as the outer shell/grip, the main body, the knife blade itself, and the buttons for the knife and lock switches. Once the model was completed in ZBrush, it had to be exported and placed within Adobe Dimension in order to be colored, textured, and rendered into the form you see above.
