Kindergarden: Storybook

About
An interactive children's storybook on how to take care of plants on mobile, "Kindergarden" aims to immerse children between ages 5-8 or younger in a fantasy world of anthropomorphised plants. The majority of the characters introduced were designed to be empathised with, hence most of the plant people introduced are school children with various quirks! Following the human protagonist, Kid, and her new friend, Onion, they will get to know various plant tools, plant types as well as some basic plant biology. In hopes of making learning fun, this information is delivered on a journey through Pottsville and attending Pottsville Kindergarden. Despite Onion's efforts to be a good tour guide however, the journey goes awry quickly! In the end, Kid learns that it is important to care for your plant friends as you would a human friend!

Process
Prior to the final product, Pottsville's inhabitants, setting and art direction were considered in some concept art. The rationale behind the coloured foreground and semi-translucent lineart of the backgrounds was to increase the readability of the overal storybook. The warm colours were selected to match the fun and fantastical setting of the Kindergarden. Ultimately, this concept work was made to worldbuild Pottsville and flesh out some of its strange inhabitants.
