What is Woo? Originally named after Emily Carr’s pet monkey, WOO Publication is Emily Carr University’s student publication showcasing student work from all disciplines including art, design, creative writing, media, illustration, and more. The publication aims to embrace the diverse stories of the Emily Carr community. All members of the ECU community are encouraged to submit. We currently accept submissions twice a year for print.

Woo in 2018/2019 When Zoë and Una took over as Editor in Chief and Creative Director they set out to question the publication in form and identity. Both publications are bound in untraditional forms to convey each issue's theme. Not only did they redefine the publication in form, they also gave Woo a fresh new look to further showcase students in their logo mark.

Fall 2018 - UNBOUND For the concept for Woo's first issue, it was integral to push the idea of being unbound by any restrictions as art and design students. We wanted to be able to express these experiences in whatever form we see fit, despite the possibility of it being drastically different from the typical book form. Our evocative, intriguing, and sometimes uncomfortable subject matter is ultimately what sets us apart from the rest of the world, and we wanted Unbound to be a safe space to embrace that: in all of its content, form, and experience.

Spring 2019 - LEAK For Woo's second issue, there was a desire to celebrate work that is influenced by other aspects of our lives, that merges disciplines, and fosters collaboration — that leaks in and out of our continuously developing practice as artists and designers both inside and outside of a school setting. It celebrates these connections that seep into our practice, from partnerships, mixed media or simply thematics of fluidity to recognize the many layers associated to art. We were determined to stay true to challenging Woo's form, and what better way to convey a "leak" than a publication that literally spills out of its casing?
