AP ART CONCENTRATION

1.What is the central idea of your concentration? (500 characters maximum)

My concentration is an investigation into the relationship between intellect and mysticism. These two concepts are fundamentally opposite of each other, so I was curious with the idea of how they could coexist side by side in our world today. This theme also touches on my fascination on the disparity between truth and artificiality.

The 11th piece in my concentration encapsulates my theme of intellect vs. mysticism because the subject, my senior homeroom advisor, Mr. Fowler is an Advanced Placement Biology teacher. He's a highly intelligent man, decorated with several college degree and research lab experience, but by the simple fact he was born in June, his astrological zodiac sign is Gemini. He has no control over what day he was born but this aspect of choice versus fate intrigued me. Mr. Fowler is a man devoted to science but because of his sign he is also assumed to have the mystical characteristics that are inherent to Gemini. But these presumptions have no clear logical basis rooted in reality, only the product of long held beliefs in superstition and mysticism.
In that piece, I chose to convey the idea of of truth and artificiality by showing the two different sides of Mr. Fowler, since the symbol for Gemini is a pair of twins. Whenever I see Mr. Fowler he smiles nice and friendly like an angel; it doesn't help that he also looks like Santa Claus, amplifying the amiable effect. But from his AP Biology students, they report he is more like the devil from the workload they have to do for his class. These are two different impressions of the same person, vastly different just due to the different settings we find ourselves when we encounter him.
