Yahoo! OpenID

OpenID will allows users to log in to more than 9,000 OpenId compliant websites with their Yahoo IDs. Yahoo will also be integrating their Sign-In Seal feature, meaning users can view an uploaded image before giving over credentials – the feature is widely used by financial institutions and is designed to reduce the effectiveness of phishing attempts.

My role was lead designer in the project working on all UI flows and visuals. The team consisted of one PM, one designer, and one dev lead. Creation of all UI and visuals for Yahoo! becoming an OpenID provider. Worked directly Google, Facebook, PayPal to collaborate on standards.

The biggest challenge from a design standpoint was getting our users to understand what was an OpenID, how it can be used and how you create one. We tested various copy along with simple visual landing pages that gave us over 250 million users trying ID's.  Unfortunately at this time Facebook began to spread the Facebook login button which in the end dominated most of the web logins.

OpenID was a great step in the right direction, facebooks popularity beat the rest of the providers (google, ibm, yahoo! etc) to the punch.
