To create a specialised magazine feature unique objects

For my magazine design I decided that instead of featuring a specific kind of object, the magazine would explore a person (me) through three objects of my choosing. The layout of the magazine would be set up as an interview.

For OBJECTIV my research was based on studying printed magazines, and some blogs that worked as a magazine to see what approach to take, as I was initially thinking about doing something web based.

I studied their mastheads as well as their article structure. You can also see a mood board showcasing the kind of illustration and graphic style I wanted for the magazine, heavily influenced by the Memphis group. In the end I didn’t work on any illustration as it probed too time consuming for the short time I had for the project.

Some of the sketchbook related to the project, at first I was thinking about using readyMag for the project, but I had been wanting to do an ePub for a while so end up choosing it as a format.

I started playing with the idea of a very complex masthead based on the focus reticule of a photo camera. But I shifted to something much simpler and more dynamic. The idea is the masthead would change colours to be related to the subject of the number, but I wanted to include a motive that would be present in al editions, so I dropped a hard shadow and included a vocalisation wave of the word OBJECTIV repeated several times by the interviewed person.

I wanted to create a system both simple and flexible that could adapt to the style of the person interviewed for the number. This way both the person and the objects he (or she) choses stay as the main focus of the design system.
