Molly Bloom's Soliloquy

Molly Bloom's Soliloquy is an editorial project that explores the 5000 word stream of consciousness that features at the end of James Joyce's Ulysses. The brief, originally set by ISTD, was to make the text more appealing to read.

This book documents the process of distilling the chapter in to 3 separate narratives that explore identity and relationships. The book is in two parts. Part 1 documents the editing of the text: full text; categorisation of themes; tangents; narratives & establishing a relationship with the photos of Birthe Piontek. Part 2 displays the 3 narratives: Molly Bloom's relationship with her husband Leopold Bloom; Molly Bloom's relationship with other people & Molly Bloom's relationship with herself.

I have paired the writing with the work of German photographer Birthe Piontek. Her photographs, which include sculpture and contemporary portrait, explores themes of the individual and self, and often comes from a place of deep personal discovery while also being universally accessible.
