Pristine: Fruit Snacks [PACKAGING]

Goal: Design a package for healthy snacks
Target Market: Children

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. The topic is a main concern for many Americans because obesity is one of the hardest disease to treat and often, overweight children become overweight adults. In order to stop obesity, we have to stop it at the root of the problem. The purpose of this project is to promote healthier eating habits with the use of product placement and packaging.

{Designer Statement}
I choose peas, cranberries, and nuts for my alternative snacks due to the fact that they are locally grown, healthy, and easy for kids to carry. In my research, I noted that kids like bright colors and sports. The hexagon shape was inspired by soccer and the colors were inspired by the snacks. I choose the name “Pristine” to mean pure and untouched.

{Typography}
The font I used are Santos Dumont (logo), Scribble Box (headline) and Serial Publication (subhead). I used scribble box, a chalkboard-like font, due to its playfulness and originality. The packages are placed in a box for design purposes. In a convenience store setting, the packages will be displayed side by side and stacked.

{Research}
In order to gain relevant information, I choose to go to Vallarta Elementary School to interview six kids around the ages of seven to ten about their eating habits (i.e. what fruits and vegetables they like to eat as well as how often they go to fast food restaurants such as McDonalds or Chili's) and observe what they ate for lunch on that day (They were given the choice of bringing their own packed meal or buying the school lunch, which consisted of milk, carrots, salad, an apple, and cheese pizza.) I also went to stores such as Nijiya Market and Vons to learn more about the healthy foods available to children.
