Grandaughters of the witches

Nietas de las Brujas / Granddaughters of the Witches
Digital Illustration and Vector Art
This was my quick illustration to celebrate the Woman's Day in 8th of March 2019.

Around the world and in Spain in particular, certain rights that were conquered after plenty of effort and sacrifice from our female ancestors are being questioned. I never thought we would be going backwards, discussing again about the right to decide about our own body, the growing genre violence or the persistent differences in salaries and power. I decided to join the purple tide and raise my voice and my pen, and did a quick design for a T-shirt I wanted to wear (mockups below... and the real versions!).

I've always liked witches. I think they represent the power that links women with life itself: they are related to Life and Death, knowing the secrets of births and death, caring for others, using traditional healing methods... In my opinion, witches embody the femininity without control. And that is something the patriarchy fears, a lot. That is why, one of my favourite sentences is the one that inspired this design:
We are the granddaughters (and grandsons) of the witches that you could not burn”.
