One of my main hobbies is kiteboarding. After manufacturing several longboards myself, I thought to try do a kite board. Kite boards are little like wakeboards, but they have less rocker. My goal was to do a little bit bigger board as a light wind board, because I had already a commercial kiteboard.

The board itself was done from 6,5mm + 4mm plywood glued and pressed together. I used a same press that I used with the longboards. The press needed little modifications to press 450 mm wide pieces. The kite board’s final size was 1400x450x10,5 mm. Before the pressing the plywood, pieces were casted with water. When the glue and the plywood dries, the board will keep better its formation.

After pressing the board was cut to a shape and sandpapered. The board’s fins needed fin boxes and those were milled and bindings’ inserts inserted at this point. When the ruff construction work was done, the board got its paint job. After paint job, the whole board was coated with a class fiber and polyester resin. The extra class fiber was sand papered off.

I had also commercial straps (light bindings), but when I was doing stuff myself I thought to go all the way DIY. Kiteboarding bindings are like a sandals. They are not as rough as wakeboard bindings and that’s why easier to manufacture. The strap binding is constructed from base plate and from strap.

The base plate was drawn with Illustrator, it was made from 5mm vinyl and was cut with laser cutter. On top of the plate was inserted foam stuffing.

The strap was made from plastic plate, foam stuffing and Velcro strap. The whole strap was attached to the board with 3D-printed mount blocks.
