The Tape (Album, Marketing, Identity)

The Tape - the project marred by the struggle to define.
This project was born out of need. No visuals giving birth to sounds this time around. There was an October '17, and I knew that before October '18, there was some things I needed to get off my chest.
A return to the DAX that could out rap an entire community doubled as an introduction of the side I've always repressed - my anger.
"There's fire in my blood and names in the mud" - hence, this self portrait's color scheme.
Now again, to be clear - I didn't know where I was taking this album visually at the beginning. At some point, eventually, I knew the colors I had in mind, and I knew what kind of typography I preferred...
The official names of the colors, as per my labeling, are Sand Beige, Orchid Gray, Sky Blue, and Cherry Red.
Given my relatively more laid back approach to visuals this time around, the single art is simple.
If anything, I made the conscious effort to make the images that are showcased close to the album's color scheme in palette.
I took some pictures near a lake I went to - God, Portrait mode does wonders (sometimes).
The above images doubled as my first tease of the project.
And here, for the first time, is how I revealed the album's tracklist.
...yeah, the project ended up dropping NOT on that date.
Anyway, let's move on to some more lyric based material.
I dedicated another set of lyrics pieces to each song actually, but the album opener (The Statement) got a whole lyric video that released along with the album's new release date.
I guess with those last three, we are beginning to move into more social media focused promotional assets.
Gradient mapping my face with the album's (now seemingly) obnoxious color scheme was quite fun.
I only had two banners - one teaser, and one for the drop.
This banner, for the drop or whatever, is actually riffing of the album's tracklist art, pictured below.
It's kind of fun having the tracklist be the opposite version of the album art.
Lastly, here's what the visuals on YouTube looked like.
I love how it's a decent continuation of the album art, proving there's more blood out there.
Thanks for checking this out + listening.
