"Blank Space Filled" Film Festival
Objective
Create a film festival of a chosen movie director. Extract a theme that ties together all of the director's selected films, conceptualize it into a visual system and coordinate a complex set of materials as a whole.
Research
Showcase Sofia Coppola's most popular films, including 1999’s The Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, 2010’s Somewhere and 2017’s Beguiled. In her films, characters always living a ‘comfortable’ but meaningless and passionless material life are emotionally disconnected until they happen upon an unlikely bond that fills their emotional gap. In the end, they understand the importance of pursuing spiritual satisfaction.
Approach / the Shimmer in Life
To convey the journey of understanding the importance of pursing spiritual satisfaction, I largely use the gloomy blue to render the lonely and empty atmosphere, and use yellow as a pop color to suggest finding the shimmer in life. To create a feeling of solitude and disconnectedness, I decided to use wall texture and acrylic board to deliver a feeling of an empty room. I also bring the blurry effect to the acrylic board to show the misunderstanding between people and places.
