ArtSpark Grant: Eunice Mural
I have lived in St. Landry Parish for over three years now, and in that time I have fallen in love with its small, sometimes overlooked historic towns. Through the assistance of the ArtSpark stipend, I was able to create a large-scale public mural on an unsightly brick wall in the historic downtown of Eunice, Louisiana.

As part of the grant, I also visited local schools and introduced my project to the children, inviting their feedback & ideas for the design. Many of the suggestions centered around a list of "DO NOTS" that included crawfish, gators, & symbols of the past. Instead of outright avoiding this cliché imagery that has come to symbolize "Cajuns", I decided to abstract it in a way that would provide a fresh perspective into this vibrant culture.

Having the community involved in the progression, installation, & celebration of this piece of public art allowed for a variety of citizens to engage deeply with this project.
