Wired Magazine Spreads: Lose the 24-Hour News

In this project, students formed groups of two (one person as the layout designer and the other as the illustrator) to produce 3 magazine spreads together. My partner, Jonathan Pinto (Jonathanpinto.net), executed the layout design, while I was responsible for the illustrations, in this case, the collages.

Together we selected an article titled "Lose the 24 Hour News" and then analyzed the magazine that the article may belong to (Wired magazine was our choice for its emphasis on tech and culture). We then generated typographic treatments, graphic elements, layout designs, and illustration style that echo the magazine's personality, as well as the article's message.
The article can be found here: https://www.utne.com/media/24-hour-news-ze0z1409zcwil
We both thought that collage would be an appropriate illustration style for the article's message, because it could convey a sense of raw, chaotic impact like the dramatic aspect of 24-hour news that the article described.
On the third spread, the author proposed a more thoughtful, calming, and reasonable way of consuming news via "slow news." Therefore, we  designed the layout to express that subject shift by opening up more negative space and combined with collages that expressed the calm and meditative quality of slow news.
