The development of the Arabic calligraphic art, as the one of the writing itself, is closely related with the Islam’s expansion since the seventh century. Until then, Arab culture was mostly transmitted orally, and although the Arabs had their own alphabet, they only used the writing for mnemonic notes, commercial accounting, epitaphs, and other minor uses. For this reason, developed in the city of Kufa (Iraq), from which it takes its name, Kufic calligraphy is a style of Arabic calligraphy that, generated from the modification of the ancient Syrian alphabet, was used to write the first copies of the Koran. A geometric writing built from the painting as a basic unit, from which have developed, from straight lines and angles, often elongated horizontally and vertically, numerous styles, such as the one present herein: Occidental Kufic Type.
El desarrollo del arte caligráfico árabe, como el de la propia escritura, está íntimamente ligado a la expansión del Islam a partir del siglo VII. Hasta ese momento, la cultura árabe se transmitía sobre todo oralmente, y aunque los árabes tenían un alfabeto propio, no usaban la escritura más que para anotaciones de carácter mnemotécnico, contabilidad comercial, epitafios y otros usos de poca importancia. Por ello, desarrollada en la ciudad de Kufa (Irak), de la cual toma nombre, la caligrafía Kufic es un estilo de caligrafía árabe que, generada a partir de la modificación del alfabeto sirio antiguo, fue utilizada para escribir los primeros ejemplares del Corán. Una escritura geométrica construida a partir del cuadro como unidad básica, de la que se han desarrollado, a partir de líneas rectas y ángulos, con frecuencia alargados horizontal y verticalmente, numerosos estilos, como el aquí presente: Occidental Kufic Type.
