Patient Presentation — Book

The representation and quality of a doctor’s view of a patient has been changing with the process of the clinical experience establishment and consolidation. Within the course of «doctor-patient» interaction the former, by identifying the semiology and formalising the disease stages, has started to perceive the latter as a scheme, a data system thus removing one’s personal qualities.

Since that moment a human body is becoming a field of objects under the process of precise analyses. The scientific research result is implemented in material form of a hospital chart, though the very person is somehow being depersonalised and becomes «one of many cases» of clinical practice.

In The Birth of the Clinic Foucault critiques the medicine institute by depicting utopian future where the clinic’s educational function becomes the primary one, and instead of analysing raw data it can fulfil the political function as well by «establishing in men’s lives the positive role of health, virtue, and happiness».

My project is a distinctive collage where these two contradictory ideas coexist, two points of view – Foucault’s and mine. Clashing with each other these structures create an opposition which delivers a timid lack of confidence regarding the justifiability of the clinic’s future portrayed by Foucault.
