Bedside Lamp

Project
The main goal of the three month assignment was to design a LED powered lamp and to build a functional proof-of-concept prototype that can be tested and showcased, resembling the final product as true as possible.

Design process
I started the project with research regarding the use of smart and semi-smart lamps in the home interior space. I found that the use of RGB LEDs or smartphone controlled design features can become gimmicks and users tend to forget about these functions easily, however, what seemed to be useful is to use chip controller in order to integrate more lamps functions into one. Especially in a bedroom use-case where most people usually have one lamp for reading and another for an ambient light, an integrated smart lamp can be useful that provides both of these.

Concept
Pin can be used both as a spot, bedside reading lamp and as an ambient mood, bedroom lighting. With the front touch interface it is easy to turn Pin on or off and to dim the brightness separately for both lights.

Inspiration
Pin’s design language was inspired by contemporary interior light styling, soft mono-shapes, minimal geometric shapes and a friendly, cute character.

CMF
Pin’s anodized aluminum body, besides the raw aluminum silver finish, can be painted in several color options, making Pin a contemporary home decoration piece.

Prototyping - Iterative thinking
One-to-one scale 3D printed, foam and cardboard models were made early during the design process. These mockups and tests helped in refining the form and details of the design.

Exhibitions
Pin was exhibited on the 2019' Stockholm Furniture Fair.
