Forty members of the University of Georgia's College Republicans gather attentively around a guest speaker at their latest general body meeting on Wednesday night.
"I don't sugarcoat things. I think we're too busy nowadays to sugarcoat things," the speaker said to the group of 30 men and women in the Miller Learning Center.
"We don't have time. We need to be getting things done."
These were the first words that Meagan Myers Hanson (R-Brookhaven), a family law attorney and state representative for Dekalb and Fulton County in District 80, said in her presentation to the organization.
Hanson has been active in the GOP for over 15 years.
She spoke to Republicans about how she ended up in the Georgia General Assembly and the hot-ticket issues that the House of Representatives is focusing on.
Hanson began her political career on Capitol Hill where she interned under former Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala) during her time at the University of Alabama. After that, she was a campaign manager for a district attorney in Birmingham, Alabama. She utilized her contacts in Georgia to work in the city of Brookhaven as a litigator and representative.
Hanson fought hard to defeat Democratic incumbent Taylor Bennett in the 2016 election.
"It was a close vote. I think I only won by about 12 votes in the primary," Hanson said, "but a reasonable Republican can win in these tight districts."
