Off-road racing refers to a type of contest where vehicles compete against one another in “off-road” conditions, such as deserts, hills, and other hazardous terrain. While many of the vehicles, such as Jeeps or Range Rovers, are already designed for off-road purposes, they are often specially modified to increase their speed and power. Off-road racing is such a popular sport that the National Automobile Museum created an Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in its Nevada facility.

One of the most important groups in the field of off-road racing is the National Off-Road Racing Association. A pioneer in desert racing, this entity was founded by Ed Pearlman and Don Francisco in the 1960s. Its landmark event is the Mexican 1000, which involves racing from Tijuana to La Paz. The inaugural 1967 race pitted 68 vehicles against one another and marked the first time that different types of vehicles were engaged in direct competition. Over the past decades, the Mexican 1000 has stood as one of professional off-road racing's most popular events. In 2015, it will take place from April 26 through April 29.
