Referencing Landscape in Abstraction, Summer 2018

As I continued to work towards abstraction, I found myself referencing landscape, where I found the horizon line in a square format an ideal place to start. I used the textured surface, moving acrylic paint, medium and metallic pigments into the composition, playing with printmaking techniques to make patterns or to pull off paint and allow layers below to bleed through. The goal was to simplify, to move away from old motifs. Perhaps all the conversation about global warming and climate change got to me. I found myself thinking again about how political conflicts create refugees and paths of destruction, scars on the earth. It's an on-going challenge to rise above these concerns of the world and to see and reveal hope.
